Background of the Study
Smart grids are vital for efficient electricity distribution; however, they are susceptible to cyber and operational anomalies that can disrupt service. The Jos Electricity Distribution Company in Plateau State faces challenges in real-time monitoring and fault detection. Quantum computing, with its ability to analyze vast datasets and detect subtle anomalies rapidly, offers a promising approach to enhance smart grid resilience (Ibrahim, 2024; Adekunle, 2023). By integrating quantum algorithms into grid monitoring systems, operators can detect unusual patterns and respond promptly to outages or cyber intrusions, thereby improving reliability and service quality. This study explores the implementation of quantum computing for real-time anomaly detection in smart grids, aiming to optimize grid performance and minimize downtime.

Statement of the Problem
Current anomaly detection methods in smart grids rely on classical computing, which may not detect subtle irregularities in time-critical scenarios (Emeka, 2023). The Jos Electricity Distribution Company struggles with delayed fault identification, leading to power outages and inefficiencies. The integration of quantum computing techniques is hindered by technical and financial challenges, limiting the ability to process real-time data effectively. This study aims to assess the feasibility of employing quantum computing to enhance anomaly detection, addressing integration challenges and improving overall grid reliability.

Objectives of the Study

  1. Implement quantum algorithms for real-time anomaly detection in smart grids.

  2. Evaluate the performance improvements in grid reliability.

  3. Propose a scalable integration model for smart grid systems.

Research Questions

  1. How can quantum computing enhance real-time anomaly detection?

  2. What are the performance benefits over classical methods?

  3. What challenges exist in integrating quantum solutions into smart grids?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the application of quantum computing to secure and optimize smart grid operations. Enhanced anomaly detection will lead to more reliable power distribution and reduced downtime, benefiting both the utility company and consumers. The research offers strategic insights for upgrading national energy infrastructure (Chinwe, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the Jos Electricity Distribution Company in Plateau State, focusing on smart grid anomaly detection, defined objectives, and selected LGAs in the sampled state only.

Definitions of Terms
Quantum Computing: Advanced computing using quantum principles for high-speed data processing.
Anomaly Detection: The identification of unusual patterns that may indicate system faults.
Smart Grids: Modern electrical grids that use digital communication for improved efficiency.

Each mini version above adheres to the structured format with in-text citations (2023–2025) and provides critical insights into the potential impact of quantum technologies across diverse sectors in Nigeria.
